Meet Dr. Ryan Gregg
Invariably when meeting someone for the first time one of the questions asked is, “What do you do for a living”? When I say that I am an audiologist the inevitable response is, “What?” or “Huh?” I fell for that joke for 15 years and proceeded to tell the individual asking that I evaluate and treat hearing and balance disorders. The follow-up question is typically, “How the heck did you find that career?” The truth is, as a child I was obsessed with dinosaurs and I thought I wanted to be a paleontologist. At some point, I lost interest in dinosaurs and I knew that I wanted to do something in the healthcare field. I grew up in Delavan, WI which is where the state school for the deaf is located. I had neighbors who were deaf, Mr. and Mrs. Peakcock, who taught at that school and a good friend, Brett, who was also deaf and whose family relocated to Delavan just so that he could attend. This was my first exposure to people who had hearing loss and where the seed for my career in audiology was planted.
I have been a licensed and certified audiologist since 1999. I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Communicative Disorders, a Master’s degree in Speech and Hearing Science from UW-Oshkosh, and my Doctorate from U of Florida.
Prior to joining Professional Hearing Care, I managed the government services team at Starkey Hearing Technologies. Before that, I co-chaired the Audiology Department for Mayo Clinic Health System-La Crosse/Onalaska, where I earned academic appointment as an assistant professor of audiology from the Mayo Clinic-College of Medicine. I served on the executive board for the Wisconsin Alliance of Hearing Professionals and previously served multiple terms on the executive board for the WI Speech-Hearing Association as well as the audiology advisory council for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
On a personal note, my wife Sara and I are high school sweethearts and will be celebrating our 22nd wedding anniversary this summer. My family lives in La Crosse, WI. Sara and I have three boys, Ethan (19), Camden (17) and Declan (13). When not chasing our kids around various sporting events, we enjoy traveling and spending time outdoors.
