What Is Misophonia?

Misophonia is a condition that triggers a strong reaction to sounds like eating, chewing, lip-smacking, licking, breathing, whistling, clicking, tapping, or certain speech and body sounds. This strong reaction is often negative and results in anger, distress, and even rage.

Although most cases of misophonia develop in childhood or early adolescence, it can also occur in adulthood. Symptoms most often begin suddenly following an emotional or environmental event associated with the trigger sound.

Certain cases of misophonia occur as a symptom of tinnitus or hyperacusis, which are often caused by hearing loss or head trauma. Symptoms can also result from multi-sensory sensitivity issues in early childhood and neurological conditions like Autism Spectrum Disorder.

What Is Hyperacusis?

Hyperacusis is a low tolerance of everyday sounds that others tolerate well. The sounds cause a strong and negative reaction and can result in distress, fear, and pain.

Hyperacusis can occur suddenly or develop over time and is caused by hyperactivity within your hearing system. Your auditory system has an automatic volume control that adjusts sound sensitivity at the central and peripheral levels and amplifies sound by up to 60 dB. When the volume control amplifies sound unnecessarily, overstimulation occurs and results in a perception of sound that is abnormally loud and often painful.

We have found treatments and sound therapies that are effective in controlling the symptoms of misophonia and hyperacusis. If you're experiencing symptoms, schedule an appointment with our experts today.
